SITE AND PREMISES The Education Committee met many difficulties in finding a suitable site for the school to serve the Wilford area of the City. The site finally chosen comprises 9.5 acres of land on the south bank of the River Trent, where the erection of the new flood bank has placed the buildings above flood level. The school as at present completed is an instalment of a final four form entry Mixed Secondary School to accommodate 600 boys and girls aged 11 to 16. The additional accommodation still to be provided is the third floor of the classroom block. The accommadation so far available comprises : Hall, Gymnasium, Library, Library Division Room, 1 Metalwork Room, 1 Woodwork Room, 1 General Practical Room, 2 Housecraft Rooms, 1 Needlework Room, 2 Science Rooms, 1 Art Room, 1 Stage Classroom, 1 History Room, 1 Geography Room and 7 Classrooms. The construction consists basically of a light steel frame with brick infilling panels and in some cases Lagos Mahogany boarding. Generally of traditional construction, the premises have extensive windows, especially on the south side. The whole of the classroom accommodation is in one block facing south-east, whilst the practicle subjects rooms at the northern end of the premises provide two Housecraft rooms and a Needlework room on the first floor and Wood, Metal and General Practical Rooms on the ground floor. The Assembly Hall, which is the focal point about which the buildings have been planned, is noteable as an example of skilled planning because its seating accommodation can be substantially increased by use of the associated dining space and corridors. A caretaker`s bungalow has been provided adjacent to the Practicle Subjects Block and in addition to the playing fields around the school, extensive areas will be available on the adjoining meadowland. Work commenced in March, 1954 and was completed in August, 1956. The contract sum for the school was £ 160,709 and the general contractors were Messrs. Progressive Builders, Limited of Nottingham. |
